I removed the X-Fi and the system was suddenly stable. I was also on Vista and experiencing a LOT of BSODs. I had Realtek ALC850 at the time and there was a HUGE difference between the two. For the record, I had an X-Fi XtremeMusic (like yours) years ago. If you like either solution, then stick with it. If you've tried both and decide that you want something better, then that is the time to ask for suggestions on other sound cards. See if you can find drivers that work with it (Vista was the last official driver release) and then see if you like it more than your onboard. Install the latest drivers (currently R2.68), give it a try, and decide if you like it or if you want something more. You have onboard audio and it is essentially free. I'm going to give you the same advice I always pass around.
